Actinomycosis



Actinomycosis, chronic infectious disease caused by Actinomyces israeli, a microorganism often (and usually harmlessly) present on the gums, tonsils, and teeth. The characteristic lesion is a hard area of multiple small communicating abscesses surrounded by granulation tissue. Other similar bacteria are usually also present.
