Academy Awards®, or Oscars®, annual awards given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for outstanding achievement in various branches of filmmaking. The major awards are for best leading and supporting actor and actress, best direction, best screenplay, and best film. The awards were first presented in 1928, when the best picture award was presented to Wings.
