Abu Dhabi (pop. 243,000), largest (25,000 sq mi/64,750 sq km) of the 7 emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE), located on the southern coast of the Persian Gulf. The land is mostly desert, with extensive oil deposits. The city of Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE.
