Aboukir

Aboukir, village in Egypt situated on the Mediterranean coast between Alexandria and the Rosetta mouth of the Nile. The Battle of the Nile (Aug. 1798), in which British naval forces under Nelson defeated Napoleon's fleet, took place in Aboukir Bay. A second battle (1801) was fought on land at Aboukir, and Napoleon's forces were again beaten decisively by the British. The village is the site of ancient Canopus, a thriving port in Hellenistic times.
